... frequently asked questions

1. How do I know what cars will be at auction?
There are several ways with the 2 different auction houses. With BCA, the larger of the 2, they operate an excellent internet service. For £7.50 you can do 20 searches on www.auctionview.co.uk. Both auctions operate a fax you back after 5pm the night before. Just call the particular auction to get the details. Another way to end up with a good buy is to attend an auction with good known sections, e.g. Motability where there will be around 100 all makes models. They were privately owned and have very low mileage normally. They represent great value compared to their cost new and are highly sought after by traders themselves. There are lots of other sections we can tell you about. To get the best bargain it is often a good idea to keep an open mind and have several cars you would consider.

2. What if I don't buy on day One? Your operator would be pleased to arrange a second visit at a 50% discount. You may however feel confident enough to return on your own after day One.

3. How do I insure my car? Normally you would need to do this from the auction with your own insurance company.

4. Can the Auction deliver? Yes at a very reasonable rate so you don't have to insure it till you receive it. It would usually be within 3 working days and be driven by a retired person normally. They insure and tax through their trade plates till arrival. You may wish to negotiate for your operator to drive it back under his trade plates and motor trader policy

5. What are the trading terms of car auctions? They have specific obligations and terms and they are clearly on display at all auctions. These are the terms under which you buy. An auction is considered a trade environment and as such is not covered by the Sale of Goods Act 1979. If there was to be a fault with a car you have no rights to a refund or repair.

6. What about liability? The choice of car is yours and so it rests with you. We use only British Car Auctions and Manheim as these are the 2 largest in the world and have excellent reputations.

7. Would the car be taxed? No. It would be whilst being delivered by the auction delivery company. Alternatively discuss with your MotorSave operator.

8. Are there many risks at auction? Generally no. All risks obviously increase with age and very high mileage. We advocate specific sections to buy from. Some of these are shown on our web site. The reliability of modern cars is very high indeed. Even high mileage is no longer the issue it once was. You get a good opportunity to inspect visually

9. Could it have been a write off or have finance owing? No. The auction checks and also insures against that for you. We then provide the written proof via an HPi report.
